When I hear the word Aflac, I always think of a duck but I also think of supplemental medical benefits. I am a mom and I have been without medical insurance in the past and it can be pretty scary. My first experience was an unexpected emergency room visit with my first daughter that had me in debt that took some months to pay off. I then had another emergency medical situation with one of my other daughters that I ended up with a doctor bill that I wish I didn’t have to pay.
I personally have not used Aflac, but I used to work with someone that had a husband that was an Aflac agent and where I first learned of the company years ago. With Aflac, the insurance doesn’t work like regular health insurance that pays the doctors and hospitals for your expenses. Aflac provides you with a safety net for your family that pays you directly if you or your loved ones become unexpectedly sick or injured and need money to help cover expenses that you might be having a hard time taking care of.
For more information on how Aflac works, watch the video below:
This fall is open enrollment. For those of you that are employed and will be enrolling for new benefits or making changes, I encourage you to check out theinfographic Can Americans Afford The Cost of Benefits Mistakes that has some pretty interesting statistics on the common mistakes made when choosing the right medical benefits coverage.
Are you a member of Aflac or have some sort of safety net for your family? Be sure to share your experience by leaving me a comment below.

*sigh* With premiums so high and coverage so low we don’t have health insurance at all. Love the idea of supplemental insurance though.
Courtney says
Ugh.. no unfortunately we don’t and I’m the type who likes to be prepared, but like Jenn said above me it’s just so expensive.

I’m thinking about getting Aflac through my husband’s work.

We have a little egg set aside, but I keep meaning to look into this.
Rachel @ Following In My Shoes says
We have a savings account for emergencies but I’m not sure if we have something like this!
Theresa says
This is such a great idea.
Jenn @therebelchick says
I wish we could afford insurance right now, but my husband’s company just raised the deductible and the premiums for their insurance plan. At least we have a little bit saved in case of an emergency, but probably not nearly enough!
Billie says
I need to set aside an emergency egg.
Becca @ Mama B says
We have a small savings set aside but could definitely use something like this, just in case.

Colleen says
We do not, but I think Aflac is a great service.
Kathy says
I used this for my pregnancy this time around and it was totally worth it. We didn’t have to pay anything out of pocket this time!
Amber Edwards says
I would love to have something, at present I don’t have any insurance. The husband has the school insurance and my kids have government insurance, but we make “too much” for me to have insurance assistance, but we make too little to get regular insurance from others.
Heather ~ Acting Balanced Mom says
We’re lucky to have good coverage through Wayne’s work… their standard plan is enough for us…
Jenn says
I need to get a safety net…I should look into gettin Aflac!
Kasandria Reasoner says
We don’t have a safety net, but I know we should really think of it. Thanks for the reminder!
