When I was a child, I remember that I used to LOVE to play house with my cousins and friends. I would always pretend that I had my own office and I was my own boss. As I grew older, I still had the dreams of owning my own business and being my own boss so I signed up for college after high school to further my skills. By the time I was 20, I was pregnant with my first daughter and I was working full time at a retail store that I was unhappy at. I decided that I was going to find a way to make some extra money at home. The internet was becoming more and more popular and since I already had a passion for using computers, I decided to teach myself how to build a website, which didn’t stop at only one.
In just a couple months my first child turns 16. In the years that have passed, I was able to build my own business that consists of a network of websites where I was able to quit my last job where I had a boss and where I had to “clock in”. Being a small business owner, I know how valuable each customer is. For small businesses like me, we look forward to each sale that we receive, no matter how small. With that said, I want to encourage you to participate in a day that has been dedicated to helping support the small businesses in our community called Small Business Saturday which takes place on Nov 24, the Saturday after Black Friday.
Last year was the first year that I participated in Small Business Saturday and I was excited to hear that over 100 million people came together to show support in their communities. I am hoping that this year is going to be just as successful.
On November 24 my family will be showing our support! Instead of buying a dozen donuts at the grocery store, I am going to take the kids to this “mom and pop” donut shop just a few minutes away. The donuts may be a little more expensive than the grocery store, but I know that the money I spend there will help to keep the donut shop that my family enjoys to stay in business.
I have already talked to my kids about this day and if things go well and the kids are good, I plan to take them to lunch to this little restaurant that I enjoy eating at that has been in business in the same spot since I was a little girl. I know I would be so sad if that business was to ever close down.
Be sure to participate too! Mark your calendars for Small Business Saturday on November 24, 2012. You can also show your support on Twitter by using the hashtag #SmallBizSat.
Will you be showing your support? Feel free to leave a comment and let me know how you plan to show your support!
