So yesterday I had a dentist appointment and I almost cancelled. I don’t know about you, but the thought of having a tooth pulled is scary even if you have had teeth pulled out before. Though my childhood my mom was pretty good at taking me to to the dentist. I have had my fair share of dental appointments, but my trip yesterday has me not wanting to go back anytime soon.
Let me remind some years back. When I was pregnant with my daughter Hannah I ate some Laffy Taffy and it pulled out one of my fillings. Since I was pregnant, there wasn’t much that I could do since you are not supposed to have x-rays when you are pregnant so I put going the dentist off for a while. After Hannah was born I went to the dentist and ended up having a root canal on my tooth. At that time I had good dental insurance, but the crown was going to cost me money I didn’t have, so I told my dentist the crown was going to have to wait. Before I could save up for that crown, I quit that job and there went the dental insurance.
So it is now some years later and that tooth that was supposed to get a crown unfortunately broke. My only choice now was to have that tooth extracted and save for an implant. I got up the courage last week and made an appointment to have the tooth pulled. Yesterday I am sitting in the dentist’s chair waiting for my turn and a little scared. At first I was thinking I could change my mind and have it extracted on a different day, this wasn’t an emergency so why was I going to torture myself. I then reminded myself that I have had 3 c-sections, what was I so scared about a tooth for.
I decided that I was going to be brave and suck it up. The dentist came in and gave me my first shot of novocaine. I am sitting there waiting for it to work and after about 5-10 minutes I could feel my cheek starting to get numb. I told myself, it better work more than this because I can still feel everything. Another 5 or so minutes go by and the dentist comes in and tells me to “open wide”! I am thinking that this dentist must know what he is doing so I went ahead and opened wide. The dentist started to pull my tooth and I swear I felt everything. I made a moaning sound and the dentist stopped and asked me if I was feeling pain and I said yes. He asked me what kind of pain, was I feeling just pressure or did I feel a sharp pain. I told him, I feel pain and it feels like you are ripping my tooth out. He then gave me another shot of novocaine, but didn’t wait to finish ripping my tooth out.
I stayed brave and I didn’t cry until I walked out of the dental office. I have had a tooth pulled before, but only felt pressure. This time I think I felt it all. From the pulling of my tooth to the tools against my teeth and the awful sounds I heard. I seriously cried almost the whole way home thinking of that horrible procedure. I went into the dentist office without pain and left in pain. As I am driving home that second shot of novocaine starts to kick in and now my lips and more of my face is numb.
So now it is the next day and my mouth is still sore and I haven’t forgot about yesterday’s experience. I am now afraid to go back, at least to this dental office!

I absolutely hate going to the dentist. I honestly dread it, but I figure I only have to suck it up and go once every six months. I swear those six months go by so fast.

Time definitely goes by fast!

terrible to not have dental insurance and an experience like that i certainly would never go back to that go. The second u felt pain you should of said something. The very second and after the 2nd shot you should of told him to stop. NEVER Ever be afraid to tell ur dentist that Novocaine isn’t working as fast as he think it did. I am so sorry to hear he hurt u. U NEED A bETTER DENTISt HUGS

I do need a better dentist. This was actually the first time I seen this dentist and definitely the last. My darn mouth is still sore and for some reason I keep thinking about it.
Lolo says
I think you should find a new one!

I literally had to cover my mouth while reading this because I could just imagine your pain! Poor thing- definitely find a new office!

I wonder if you had some nerve damage that kept the Novocaine from working. I’ve had all my wisdom teeth pulled. (1,1,2) The first two, the dentist used Novocaine for and I was fine. The last two, the dentist only knocked you out. I had never been put under in my life and wound up getting sick from it. Thanks dentist.
I’m overdo for a cleaning which I hate even worse.

I hate the dentist..so much that I haven’t been in almost three years. I take good care of my teeth and don’t get cavities but I really need to go get a cleaning anyway. I totally feel you on not wanting to go!

I hate going, but make myself go every six months…

I am so sorry for you! I am so lucky because I love my dentist and she is always super gentle. Try asking some of your gal pals about their dentist and you may discover a gem, like I have. Good luck, hang in there and have a glass of wine!
Jenn says
Oh no! So sorry you had a bad experience.
Robin Gagnon {Mom Foodie} says
Ugh, the dentist. I would hate to be one.
Liz @ A Nut in a Nutshell says
I would be absolutely furious about that!
Mellisa says
I am so sorry! That sounds awful!! I am having issues with a tooth that I had a root canal on over a month ago. It hurts worse now than it did before. I am suppose to go back in tomorrow and I really don’t want too.
Donna says
I have a phobia of the dentist and only go about 2-3 years… I know I should go every 6 months, but I just can’t do it. I would not go back to this particular dentist, though If I were you.
Lisa says
He definitely should have given you more than one shot! I just broke my molar. I got 3 shots of novacain and they didn’t pull it. He filled it instead.
Colleen says
I’m so sorry! I’ve had teeth pulled, wisdom while actually “under” and the other one with just the novicane. I prefer to be knocked out.
Hope you feel better soon.
Toni says
I hate going to the dentist even for just a cleaning.
HilLesha says
I had the same experience with a dentist. Come find out she didn’t use novacaine, something similar. She said that hardly any dentists use novacaine anymore, so that’s probably the reason why. 🙁

You are not supposed to feel any pain at all!! I would not go back to this dentist. I do not like going to the dentist at all. Last month, I had to go to the dentist because I could not stand dealing with the pain and problems of a wisdom tooth. Like you, I wanted to cancel, but I did not and went to the dentist. I was scared! I feel my blood pressure rise, and I did not want to go through with it. But the dentist was so good that I did not feel any pain at all. In fact, I did not know he pulled out the tooth. I am sorry to hear that you felt everything! I hope that you are starting to feel better now!
