For those of you with health insurance, are you prepared for the out of pocket expenses that are involved if something bad was to happen. Medical debt happens to be one of the leaded causes of bankruptcy.
Did you know that the average cost to treat a broken leg is more than $10,000?
Even though you might have health insurance, that policy that you have probably does not cover out of pocket expenses that you might not be financially able to pay. When an illness or injury occurs there are costs such as transportation to follow-up medical appointments, caregiving costs, everyday household costs like rent and utilities and other costs because you are unable to work.
Aflac is a company that can help offset out-of-pocket costs and also educate consumers about how voluntary insurance like Aflac can really help to fill in the gap with your health insurance policies. Take a peek at the Aflac Real Cost Calculator to see the average out-of-pocket expenses that are associated with a number of injuries and illnesses. This calculator will help you to see a breakdown of the following:
- Medical and out-of-pocket costs including deductibles and copays.
- Household expenses during treatment and recovery such as rent, mortgage, car payments and utilities.
- Out of pocket expenses like transportation for follow-up appointments and other heath care needs.
I am one that has dealt with unexpected costs in the past. With my second pregnancy, I didn’t know I was going to have a HUGE co-payment when I delivered my daughter and I was so shocked when I got a bill that I wasn’t expecting to pay. Had I known beforehand about this cost, I probably would have either got a supplemental insurance or would have saved each month so it didn’t come as a surprise. I learned my lesson there and was prepared with my next pregnancy.
What type of out of pocket expenses have you had to pay that you weren’t expecting?
Such important info to know.
Its amazing how quickly things add up.
This was shocking to see how much certain illnesses would cost.
Medical costs can add up so quickly. This seems like a great tool!
I just had Lithotripsy to bust up a kidney stone. SO FAR out of pocket is over $1,500. Not happy!! It could be worse (that’s not really THAT much), but still money we don’t just have lying around!!! Love this calculator. That’s very helpful.
Wow, things add up quickly! It’s scary.
Yikes. A family member is having his bladder removed on Friday and I just did the math for him. Holy moly. Thankfully he has great insurance but YIKES. It’s scary how much things cost and how many of us don’t have great insurance to pay for most!
I found this to be very interesting about how the costs of healthcare can add up for just a child’s broken leg. I think that healthcare in this country is to expensive and if Aflac can help with the added costs then I think that is very good.
I completely understand about unexpected medical bills. My daughter had to have major surgery recently and we have paid over $3000 out of pocket and we have insurance!
Thanks for this information!
this is amazing thing can add up fast!
This time last year I had chronic appendicitis which meant that it didn’t burst but caused a lot of problems, headaches, expenses, and days upon days in the hospital. The surgery, tests, follow-ups were mostly covered by our insurance but thankfully we had enough in savings to cover the out of pocket expenses which weren’t cheap. Aflac could have came in handy!
I know all too well about medical expenses and that sticker shock you described.
I’m starting to get so nervous that I don’t have medical insurance! These numbers scare me!
My husband has great insurance coverage through his work in the case of a huge medical emergency – but I can see where supplemental insurance could be very important for some people.
We’re really looking into getting this. My husband & son don’t even have basic health insurance. :\
When my son was born he spent 86 days in the NICU. Thankfully our insurance covered most of it but our portion was still thousands of dollars.
I hope my parents did not have to pay that when I broke my leg!
its scary how expensive medical care is and i am so fortunate to have the majority of mine covered by my husbands military insurance
