I was invited to the #CaptainAmericaEvent. Costs and expenses for my trip were covered by Disney but all opinions expressed are my own.
If you have been following along, you may have seen that I posted an interview for Chris Evan and Scarlett Johanson, today is the day I share with you our interview with Anthony Mackie, Sam Wilson aka Falcon from Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as some fun information about his character in the film.
In Captain America: The Winter Solider, Mackie plays Sam Wilson aka Falcon who is an ex-military paratrooper who works with veterans in Washington, D.C. Secretly trained by the military in aerial combat using a specially designed wing pack, Falcon becomes an indispensable ally when he teams up with Captain America Black Widow.
When it comes to the Marvel characters and their costumes, some of them are pretty crazy like Iron Man’s costume and I could only imagine some are very HEAVY. For the Falcon, the wings are made from a lightweight polymer with Kevlar detail so that small arms fire will not destroy them. Falcon also wears a short sleeve Kevlar shirt with standard camo pants to keep his costume as lightweight as possible to allow him to stay longer in the air.
Here is Mackie’s thoughts about his costume:
It was great, it was, uh, the first time I put that costume on. I mean literally I couldn’t stop smiling, I was running around the room. It was — you know, it’s, it’s like I said, it’s one of those moments where you know, you just have to allow yourself to enjoy it. At a certain point in time you just have to — it’s like the first time I met Prince. Like I was like, he’s Pri– no no no. I’m cool. Uh, uhhhhhhhhh. You know, you just have to allow yourself to be in the moment and enjoy it.
Once you see Anthony Mackie in action as the Falcon, you will probably assume that he has had some type of special training. Although Mackie did not do any specific training or any skydiving to play the part, he did work out a regiment that simulated the feeling of flight. When it came to getting in shape for the part, Anthony told us that he did have a diet that included salmon, chickens, tunafish, asparagus and a cup of brown rice at noon every day for three months.
Let me tell you that I LOVE the fact that Marvel has chosen Mackie to play the Falcon, one of the first African-American superheroes in a mainstream comic. I have been a fan of his since I seen him on 8 Mile and then Real Steel. These are just two of over a few dozen films he has been involved in. He has talent and a great sense of humor!
Below is our interview at the Captain America Press Junket last month at the Beverly Hilton. You will want to listen to this interview if you need a good laugh. You will find about his thoughts of his role in the film as well as hear about a store manager at a popular craft store that made Anthony Mackie pay for a bunch of posters he signed for their customers.
