For those that have been patiently waiting, the new Lucasfilm “Strange Magic”, from the mind of George Lucas is now in theaters TODAY. For those that haven’t about this film yet, it is a magical musical fairy tale with fairies and goblins that uses some of the plot from William Shakespare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
I screened the movie last week and thought the movie was cute, FUN and I LOVED the storyline and the message that is being sent that everyone deserves to be loved, no matter what you look like on the outside.
This animated film takes place in a magic forest that is divided by light and dark. The story line first starts by following the fairy princess Marianne (Evan Rachel Wood) who has had her heart broken when she is cheated on by her fiance Roland (Sam Palladio). Marianne decides to have a new outlook on life and wants to forget about love altogether.
Despite the fact that Marianne wanted to forget about love, her sister Dawn can’t stop talking about finding it. Marianne finds herself on a mission with Sunny the elf (Elijah Kelley) who is in love with Dawn to help her sister who is love struck with the ugly Bog King (Alan Cumming) by love potion that can only be made by flower petals that can be found in the Dark Forest.
Marianne sets out on a mission with Sunny to find her sister that has been captured by the Bog King. Not only is Marianne on a mission, so is Roland who is adamant on finding the love potion to make Marianne fall back in love with him so that he can become prince.
You will have to watch the movie to see how it all ends…
After interviewing George Lucas last week I learned that Lucas had thoughts of creating this film about 15 years ago and wondered if he could tell a love story using love songs. He mentioned that music is a huge part of life so you will find that in “Strange Magic” Lucas takes his audience through a musical journey with 6 decades of pop music. Throughout the film the different “love” songs are played perfectly to go along with each scene. Lucas mentioned in his interview that this movie originally started with over 100 songs and after all final edits, you will only hear 25 songs of those 100.
I love fairies and fairy tales so I found this movie to be really fun and the animation was amazing. Not only did the characters have great detail, the songs that are played in the sequence played made the movie perfect! Although many George Lucas fans probably won’t enjoy this film because this film is “girly”, I think many will, especially moms like this one that enjoy taking their children to movies that fun that have an ending with a good message!
