This month I had a little fun with some coffee filters and Borax to make some homemade ornaments. Since I am a fan of Star Wars I created a fun Stormtrooper Snowflake that I put up in my window.
Making these snowflakes with a coffee filter was fun and easy. Here is the supplies that you will need to make your own Star Wars Stormtrooper Snowflake:
- Borax
- Water
- Coffee Filter
- Stormtrooper Snowflake Pattern
Instructions:
- First you will cut out the Stormtrooper snowflake pattern.
- Lay your coffee filter flat. Fold it in half to form a semi-circle. Press edges firmly. Now fold the coffee filter in half again. Fold your quarter-circle into thirds.
- Hold the pattern or trace pattern on the coffee filter and cut out the pattern.
- In a mixing bowl dissolve 3 tablespoons of Borax into 1 cup of water.
- Pour enough Borax solution to cover the bottom of a baking dish or pie plate.
- Place coffee filter in dish and push down to make sure snowflake is coated in Borax solution.
- Allow to sit overnight or until solution has dissolved. Remove snowflake from dish and hang it on the wall, window or wherever you want to put it.
If you have some pipe cleaners you can get creative and make some other things with this Borax solution as well. In hours it turns into crystals which can be really FUN.
I took one of my makeup sponges, a pipe cleaner, the Borax solution in a cup and green food coloring to make this unique crystal ornament that the kids thought was really neat.
