Disclosure – I was invited to the #CaptainAmericaEvent. Costs and expenses for my trip were covered by Disney/ABC but all opinions expressed are my own.
It can be very fun and exciting to interview the cast from our favorite movies. It is also just as fun to interview those behind the scenes that play a key role to making that magic happen on the screen.
At the Captain America: Civil War Press Junket I attended last month we were able to sit down with Marvel Directors Anthony and Joe Russo to find out more about their roles in the Captain America films.
When Anthony Russo and Joe Russo walked into the room they couldn’t help but notice that a majority of the ladies in front of him were wearing shirts with #TeamCap or #TeamIronMan. He started the interview with asking us a couple questions. First he wanted to know if we had seen the movie and also…
#TeamCap or #TeamIronMan
Joe then continues to tell us that this was they were hoping for. That their intent with the film was to argue with your family and friends about it once you watched the movie. They didn’t want to make a declarative statement one way or the other. Joe admitted “We just want to represent both as accurately and emotionally as we could“.
Is There Rivalry Among These Brothers?
I think that it is pretty amazing that these brothers get to work together as directors for these big Marvel films. We had to ask Anthony and Joe if there is any rivalry between them when writing the script and thinking out the process for Captain and Ironman.
Anthony was quick to say no! Here is what he had to say.
No, I don’t think there was rivalry just because we both love both characters. You know, like our process has always been, we like very layered storytelling so we often times when we’re breaking the story or prepping a movie we’ll sort of step through the story from different characters points of view. We’ll take a pass where it’ll just be all about this character. And then we’ll take a pass where it’ll be all about that character. We work with ensembles a lot in our work. And so it’s become part of our process to really have moments where the whole movie belongs to somebody else, just one particular character for a moment as we’re thinking about the film from beginning to end.
You may have already heard that Spider-Man has a role in the new Civil War movie and I couldn’t be anymore excited. Inquiring minds wanted to know more about Spider-Man’s future. .
Where Did They Find Him? Are They Keeping Him?
Joe spoke up right away and said they are doing everything they can to hand on to him. Then Anthony says ” Yeah. We’re more in love with him than anybody”.
What we learned is that there was a really exhaustive audition process for the role of Spider-Man. Joe shared with us that Spider-Man was a very important character to him as a kid. He also was a big comic book collector and still has his collection. Joe said “that character was my favorite character growing up. So to be able to interpret him on screen was like a dream come true”.
