Disclosure – I received an invite to the #CinderellaEvent. All expenses were paid for and covered by Disney. The opinions stated herein are 100% my own.
When I watched the movie Cinderella, I thought that the dresses looked amazing, especially Cinderella’s ball gown and her wedding dress. Those beautiful dresses that you see in the movie Cinderella were designed by the one and only Oscar winning costume designer Sandy Powell!
A few weeks ago during my trip to Hollywood for the Cinderella press day we also had the opportunity to sit down with Sandy Powell and ask her some questions about the costumes that we seen in the film. When it comes to costumes, Sandy knows what she is doing.
Here is some of Sandy Powell’s sketches of her costumes she designed for Cinderella.
Here are those sketches, turned into gowns and worn beautifully in the film.
All of the dresses were amazing and I have a couple favorites. During the interview we asked Sandy some questions that you might be wanting to know if you have seen the film…
What was your favorite costume to make?
When asked this question Sandy laughed and said that her costumes are like her children and she doesn’t have a favorite. She says she likes different costumes at different times during the day. She did mention that she is really proud of Cinderella’s ball gown because it took the longest for her to develop and it came out exactly how she had hoped.
How long did it take you to create all the costumes?
Sandy said that she worked on the costumes for over a year from start to finish and was working until the last day of shoot. The last things that they shot was the wedding scene and that the wedding dress was the last thing that she designed.
Can you tell us a little bit more about the Fairy Godmother’s costume
Sandy said that the idea she had was rather ambitious and they didn’t have enough time to develop and it could have gone a lot further and been a lot more success. She had a mad idea she actually literally twinkled, and all over in sequences. She says they got the lightening designed with all the circuits made up by a lighting company which took longer than expected. She says they couldn’t construct the costume until the lighting was done and were waiting and waiting and that the costume actually ended up getting thrown together at the last minute.

I attended a reception at the El Capitan before the Cinderella World Premiere and had the opportunity to see some of these costumes in person and take photos.
Out of all Sandy Powell’s costumes in Cinderella I have to say that my favorite costume would have to be the wedding gown. It is so beautiful and a perfect gown for this fairy tale film. This is a hand painted gown that Lily James wears in the end of the film in the wedding scene.
A group photo with Sandy Powell was a must have!
Cinderella is playing in theaters NOW!
