I don’t know about you, but I was never good at algebra. I took it in high school and never wanted to take it again. I really did not like algebra at all. What amazes me is now that my children are in school, they seem to be introducing algebra at an earlier age. My oldest just started high school this year, but already completed algebra in eighth grade and now is off to geometry.
Now that my oldest has whizzed past algebra which gave me great relief, I have my second oldest daughter Hailey who just started 7th grade. She is currently in pre-algebra and oh do I feel for her. I have been watching her each night work on her homework that sometimes include long essays and sometimes she struggles with some of it. What is not fun is when she asks for mom’s help and I have to look for help to find the answer. While I did pass algebra when I was in high school, it has been many years since I touched the stuff. I am not alone though.
Almost six in ten (58%) parents confess that algebra is difficult for them to help their children with – even more so than other math-heavy subjects like statistics (31%) and economics (18%). Close to half (49%) of their offspring also place this high on their lists of hardest topics.
If you have a child that is close to “algebra taking” days, Sylvan Learning offers a Fit 4 Algebra screener that your child can take to see if they are ready for algebra. Last month, just for my own knowledge, I had Hailey take this Fit 4 Algebra screener. When I asked her to take it, I thought she was going to give me a sigh, but she didn’t. She was actually excited to take it, just to see what the results said.
After she took the screener, she immediately asked to see what her results where. I was kind of anxious to see what the results were going to say too! So I logged into my Sylvan Learning account and went to read her results. Not only was I impressed with the results, Hailey was pretty excited too. Her overall fitness level is STRONG, so I am going to worry a little less about her taking algebra next year. She was so impressed with the results, she even shared them with her math teacher.
Below is a screenshot of Hailey’s results:
The results report is pretty handy. It gives you an Overall Fitness Level, but also tells you where the student can use some help. I think this test could come in real handy with Pre-Algebra teachers, to see just how ready their students are when it comes to moving on to the next level.
